For over 27 years, through 300 issues, Gerhard created elaborate and intricate backgrounds that blew the minds of readers as they followed CEREBUS on his adventures. The backgrounds became a key element of the series connecting the illusion of realism to the parody character.
The series has been hailed as ‘one of the most sprawling pieces of visual fiction ever created.’

Gerhard has been exploring other creative endeavors including commissioned work through his website, GerhardArt.com; contributing to the awesome Winsor McCay tribute book: Little Nemo, Dream Another Dream among others.

Through his commissioned work, he has fashioned backgrounds for characters drawn by Dave Gibbons (Watchmen Dr Manhattan on Mars), Bernie Wrightson (Swamp Thing), Kelley Jones (Batman), Herb Trimpe (Hulk vs. Wolverine), and most recently, Frank Cho (Jungle Girl) among others.
